ARKADELPHIA, Ark. - The Harding offense continued to struggle as Henderson State completed a three-game Gulf South Conference sweep of the Bisons, winning 8-1 on Sunday at Clyde Berry Field. The Reddies won 9-0 and 7-2 on Saturday and allowed only two earned runs in the series' 25 innings.
Harding (19-20, 4-8 GSC) lost its fourth straight and fell below .500 for the first time this season. Henderson State (18-25, 3-11) had not won a conference game prior to this weekend.
Things looked good for the Bisons early as leadoff hitter J.D. Glenn singled, stole second, and scored on Bo Whitaker's base hit. But Harding never crossed the plate again, as Henderson State starter Aaron Moulton (5-2) allowed only five more hits and completed the game with seven strikeouts.
Mike DeVito led the Henderson State offensive attack, going 3-for-3 with a triple and two RBI. Cody Duncan hit his fourth home run of the season, a solo shot to lead off the fourth.
Glenn and Whitaker each had two hits for the Bisons.
Harding starter Troy Keith (2-2) lasted 5.2 innings, allowing seven hits and six earned runs. He walked four and struck out four.
Henderson State had not swept a three-game GSC series since blanking Harding to open the 2006 conference season.
Harding's next action will come Tuesday against Central Baptist in a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. at Jerry Moore Field.
